l.a. Eyeworks

l.a. Eyeworks was founded in 1979 by Gai Gherardi and Barbara McReynolds, two friends who were inspired by the artistic and cultural scene in Los Angeles.

Having trained as opticians, the duo worked in several legendary optical shops and learnt from the area's most notable craftspeople before opening their own store.

l.a. Eyeworks frames are instantly recognisable for their bold and unconventional designs, with a focus on both colour and shape. Each design begins with a hand-drawn sketch, the first stage of a meticulous production process where the finest materials are shaped by a combination of technology and hand-finished crafting.

Made with fine acetate and metal materials, the frames are manufactured in artisanal factories in Italy and Japan using a combination of advanced technology (e.g. computer-aided sculpting) with the warmth and finesse of hand-finishing. Even the colours of temple tips are hand-chosen to complement the custom colours of their metal frames.

Collections are produced in limited edition quantities, allowing the company to make more creative shapes with imaginative colours and innovative surface treatments.

Because the founders were both seasoned opticians before they began designing eyewear, l.a. Eyeworks frames demonstrate a great understanding of facial proportions and the principles of making a comfortably fitting frame that can accommodate a wide range of prescriptions.

In addition to their eyewear collections, l.a Eyeworks has also collaborated with artists and designers to create limited edition frames.

The company has been recognised for its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity, featuring models of all ages, genders, and backgrounds in their advertising campaigns. Since 1981, the brand's signature portrait ad campaign has featured an eclectic mix of more than 200 high-profile celebrities and lesser-known cultural provocateurs in an ever-evolving series of stunning black-and-white images, anchored by the legendary tagline: A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.

l.a Eyeworks eyewear has adorned the faces of many celebrities from Andy Warhol, Elton John, and Grace Jones to Rihanna, Lady GaGa, and Samuel L Jackson. Whilst l.a Eyeworks frames have been worn by many well-known people, the deeper intention is for each customer to find a frame that doesn't conform to any fashion sensibility but their own.

The brand has a loyal following of customers who appreciate their unique and innovative designs and really look forward to the arrival of new collections. That’s certainly the case with our own customers here at Auerbach & Steele!
