First floor

The eye examination

Our First floor has two consulting rooms, equipped with the latest technology. In addition, we have a further accessible consulting room on our ground floor.

Your full eye examination will take approximately 40 minutes, sometimes longer if further tests are needed. Our optometrists will test your sight and check the health of your eyes. This process involves finding out about your general health, personal and family medical history and your lifestyle, including your experience with glasses and contact lenses prior to your visit to Auerbach & Steele. We will thoroughly assess the health of your eyes by examining them both internally and externally.

An OCT scan can help to detect eye conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy before the symptoms become apparent. An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a hospital-quality scan that uses cutting-edge technology to look more closely at your retina. Digital images will be stored and compared at subsequent visits to show any changes in conditions. Your optometrist will advise if an OCT scan is recommended.

If more tests are indeed required, we have the most advanced equipment and technology to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Appointments for eye examinations are strongly recommended so please call ahead or click here to book in advance.

The private room

There are times you might prefer a more discreet and personal style consultation. We are delighted to be able to welcome you to our gorgeous private room. The room offers a quiet, relaxed place to try on frames at your leisure. It also houses a range of luxury precious metal and buffalo horn frames.

Technology & science

We invest heavily in the latest technology on the market, recently purchasing the newest retinal scanner, the Heidelberg Spectralis. This state-of-the-art scanner can detect underlying health conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure before symptoms start to show.

Another new purchase is the innovative mirror scanner from Hoya. This clever piece of kit measures your eyes within your chosen frame with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring perfect positioning of the varifocal lens.

Contact lenses

We typically reserve a one-hour consultation for an initial contact lens appointment. We will discuss your reasons for choosing contact lenses and how frequently you plan to wear them. This, coupled with the results of your eye test, help determine the right lens for you. Because we are independent, we are not limited in the choice of lenses we can recommend. We source the best lenses for your particular requirements, made from the latest materials from well-known international manufacturers. When you collect your lenses, our fully qualified dispensing opticians show you how to fit and remove them in our custom-built teaching area. We ensure you only leave when you feel totally comfortable with the process.

Treatments

Your eyes can tell a lot about your general health and many conditions can be diagnosed during an eye examination long before any other symptoms appear. Conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can be detected and our customers can be referred for treatment where necessary.

But there are other conditions that we can treat here. Dry eyes is a condition that is becoming increasingly prevalent. The widespread use of air conditioning, central heating and increasingly, the time we spend looking at screens, has led to this increase. We can advise on best practice to stem the condition and prescribe eye drops to minimise the discomfort.
